I have drafted a graph of the timeline of African Americans in the United States since 1619 to present. The graph below is a representation of some notable events post Civil War. The African American race would have been so much further along if Whites would have just let us live unencumbered after slavery. But every time Blacks got a chance to move forward, laws were put in place to impede progress or riots and massacre occurred.
If we tried to live by a "Separate but Equal" within our own Black communities, White supremacist groups and/or the Government would work to disrupt or destroy those wealthy areas, such as the Black Wall Street in Tulsa OK. If we demanded our equality as US citizens, we were intimidated or killed and our leaders were assassinated.
Even today, we are over policed and unfairly treated in the criminal justice system. We are commonly presumed guilty and have to prove our innocence.
